Frequently asked questions about 1-1 therapy…
We know that starting individual therapy can be an intimidating first step for some. To help you understand what one-to-one counselling is and what it involves, we have answered some of the most frequently asked questions on the topic.
What is one-to-one therapy?
One-to-one therapy, sometimes referred to as face-to-face counselling, is a proven treatment for a wide range of mental health issues.
Involving in-person sessions with a qualified clinician, you will explore your thoughts and emotions in a confidential space, working through your concerns and developing practical techniques for use both in and outside of treatment.
What can I expect in a one-to-one therapy session?
If you have never completed therapy before, you might feel hesitant to share your thoughts and emotions with someone you don’t know.
Everyone’s experience in therapy will be different, which is why we work with you to tailor your treatment to achieve the most effective results for your personal concerns.
From here, you will talk with your practitioner to understand and overcome your challenges, at a pace suited to you. This is vital in creating positive, long-term changes, and aiding you toward a healthier, more fulfilling life.
How long does one-to-one therapy typically last?
There is no set time frame for our face-to-face counselling. Everyone’s experience will be different, which is why we work with you to tailor your treatment for the most effective results.
You might see improvements after just a couple of weeks, or require approximately 16-18 sessions or more to make a meaningful difference. Sometimes people will complete one course of treatment, undergo a period of therapeutic consolidation, and then refer back for further sessions with a new goal or area of focus.
Whatever you need, we work closely with you to accomplish it with a treatment plan bespoke to your situation.
What issues can be addressed in one-to-one therapy?
Our treatment can be used to address a wide range of concerns you may be experiencing with your mental health, such as:
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Panic attacks
- Grief
- Low self-esteem
- Insomnia
- Anger
- Phobias
- OCD
- Trauma (PTSD)
- Postnatal Depression
Can medication be prescribed during one-to-one therapy?
Although Therapy for You cannot prescribe medication, GPs or other mental health professionals can issue medication throughout the course of your therapy.
Thought to be an effective approach when treating certain challenges, undergoing both therapeutic and medicinal treatment can help address immediate symptoms and underlying issues at the same time.
Can I switch therapists if I'm not comfortable?
If you encounter issues with your therapist, we always encourage you and your practitioner to talk through issues first. By taking time to repair your relationship, just as you would outside of therapy, you can turn your experience into a powerful lesson.
However, if you do need to be reallocated to a new therapist, this can be arranged. During this process, we will try to take your preferences into account as best we can.
What if 1-1 therapy is not right for me?
Everyone’s path to recovery is different. If one-to-one therapy with a TFY mental health professional in Essex does not suit your needs or preferences, we provide a range of alternative ways to get help for our patients:
- Free online CBT courses
- Group therapy near you
- Text-based therapy
- Video call therapists
- Over the telephone counselling
Furthermore, if depression is impacting you and your partner’s relationship, we recommend our depression counselling for couples where you both meet with a specially trained therapist to explore your challenges and work towards your goals.
